Is Jim Beam a bourbon or a whiskey, and how is Jim Beam made?

Both. Jim Beam is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, and all bourbon is whiskey. To carry the name it must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn, distilled to no more than 160 proof, aged in new charred American oak and, as a straight bourbon, matured for at least two years; the rules are published by the US TTB standards of identity for whisky and the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. Jim Beam uses a mash of corn, rye and malted barley, a sour-mash yeast strain the family has kept alive since Prohibition ended, and a minimum of four years in the barrel for White Label. Jacob Beam sold his first barrel in 1795; the brand took the name of James B. Beam, who rebuilt the distillery in 120 days after Repeal in 1933; and the seventh generation of the family still oversees it. The producer’s own story is at the Jim Beam official site.

How to drink Jim Beam

White Label and cola is the Australian default and there is nothing wrong with it; Jim Beam and dry ginger with a squeeze of lime is the better drink. Black Extra Aged takes ice, and Single Barrel is for neat pouring or an Old Fashioned with a single sugar cube and two dashes of bitters. The infused bottles are pre-flavoured mixers: keep the mixer simple, soda, lemonade or cola, and serve them cold.
